For years, Naver Map was the best way to find restaurants in Korea, and the most frustrating way to book them. Every reservation needed a Korean phone number. That changed in June 2026. Foreign visitors can now verify their identity with a passport and book restaurants, cafés, salons and more directly in Naver Map.
I live in Seoul and use Naver Map every day. Here is how the new passport verification works, what can go wrong, and when you should use CatchTable instead.
Quick answer: since June 4, 2026, travelers with a passport issued outside Korea can verify on a smartphone, with no Korean phone number, and then use Naver Map’s booking, ordering and payment features. You need a Naver account, your passport and your phone camera. Some businesses still don’t take foreign bookings, so keep CatchTable Global as a backup.
What changed in 2026?
| Before | Now (since June 2026) |
|---|---|
| Korean mobile number needed for most bookings | Passport verification on your phone, no Korean number |
| Foreigners mostly used Naver Map just to search | Foreigners can book, order ahead and pay on Naver Map |
| Hard to verify without calling support | Fully self-service on a smartphone |
Naver says it will keep adding services and languages. Naver Map can also auto-translate Korean reviews into English, which makes choosing a restaurant much easier.
What you need
- A passport issued outside Korea, valid and not expired
- A Naver account whose name and date of birth match your passport exactly
- The Naver Map app on your phone, with camera access allowed
- A passport that has not already been used to verify another Naver account
How to book a restaurant on Naver Map with your passport
- Install Naver Map and switch the app language to English in the settings.
- Sign up or log in to Naver. Enter your name and date of birth exactly as they appear on your passport.
- Find the restaurant and open its page. Look for the green Book (예약) button. No button means the restaurant does not take Naver bookings.
- Pick date, time and party size. Read the deposit and cancellation rules carefully.
- Verify with your passport when asked: photograph your passport on a flat surface in good light with no glare, then complete the face check.
- Submit and wait for confirmation. Some restaurants confirm instantly; others show “pending” until staff approve it. A pending request is not a confirmed table yet.
- Save the confirmation (screenshot it) and arrive on time. Many places release your table after 10–15 minutes.
Troubleshooting: why it might not work
- Verification fails: check that your Naver account name and date of birth match your passport exactly, and retake the photo without glare.
- “Already used” error: each passport can verify only one Naver ID. Log in to the account you verified first.
- No Book button: the business does not use Naver Booking. Try CatchTable, call, or walk in.
- Booking blocked for foreigners: businesses can limit bookings from accounts treated as foreign. This setting drew criticism in 2026 and may change, but if you hit it, book elsewhere.
- Payment problems: if a deposit or pre-payment fails with your card, pay at the restaurant or use another platform.
Naver Map vs CatchTable: which should you use?
| Naver Map | CatchTable Global | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Everyday restaurants, cafés, salons, local spots | Hyped chef restaurants, fine dining, Culinary Class Wars spots |
| Sign-up | Naver account + passport verification | Email or Google/Apple, no verification |
| English | Translated reviews; booking pages partly Korean | Full English app |
| Coverage | Huge (most businesses in Korea are on Naver) | Smaller, but most “hard to book” places |
My rule: search on Naver Map, book on Naver if the button works, and fall back to CatchTable for the famous places. See our Culinary Class Wars restaurant guide for which chef spots use CatchTable.
