I love egg tarts, and I have eaten a lot of them. The best one I have had so far is not in Lisbon or Macau. It is in Seoul, at a tiny Portuguese bakery near Hyehwa Station called Nata de Nata.

Why this bakery is special

  • Run by a Portuguese baker. Luis, the owner, appears to run the bakery himself. You can watch the team rolling pastry in the open kitchen.
  • A TV-certified “master”. The bakery was featured on SBS “Master of Living” (생활의 달인), a long-running Korean TV show that finds the best craftspeople in the country, and Luis was named its egg tart master.
  • Classically trained. A Le Cordon Bleu boulangerie diploma hangs on the wall.
  • Portugal in a small room. Blue azulejo tiles, Barcelos roosters and posters of Lisbon and the Algarve.
